W Trek Guided Tours Compared: Three Multi-Day Programs

Which of these is actually the W Trek?

The names sound interchangeable; the programs are not. The 3-Day Guided Experience (from €730, checked August 2026) is a hotel-based package: the operator lists a 3-star hotel in Puerto Natales with private bathroom, airport transfers, a visit to Milodón Cave and a full-day guided tour of the park with a short walk on the shore of Grey Lake. You see the massif from the classic viewpoints, but you do not hike the W.

The W Trek Express (from €1,034, checked August 2026) does cover the three famous sections — Base of the Towers, the French Valley and the Grey Glacier viewpoint — over five days, with transport, ferry and catamaran tickets arranged and one night camping in a pre-pitched tent at Paine Grande. The limit is in the fine print, and it matters: the operator states that the trekking guide accompanies you on the first day only. On the remaining hiking days you walk the trail independently.

The 5-Day Trek with camping and Grey Glacier navigation (from €1,642, checked August 2026) is the full guided version: a group trek with camp accommodation inside the park, breakfast, lunch box and dinner per itinerary, park entrance fees, and a boat trip on Grey Lake toward the glacier.

How to choose by budget, time and autonomy

On budget alone the ladder is clear: from €730 for the hotel-based 3-Day, from €1,034 for the semi-independent Express, from €1,642 for the fully guided camping trek (all checked August 2026). What you are buying as you move up is guiding and in-park logistics rather than comfort — the cheapest program is the one with the softest beds.

On time: the park itself lists the W as a 3-to-5-day route, and CONAF publishes distances per leg rather than an official total — summing those official legs, the classic W works out to roughly 76 km. Five days is the honest allocation for hiking all three valleys; the 3-Day program avoids the question entirely by not trekking.

On autonomy: the W is well marked and busy in season, and the park requires every hiker to register at each ranger station (guardería) along the way. If you are an experienced hiker happy to walk long days alone, the Express model — logistics arranged, guide on day one — may be all you need. If you want someone reading the conditions and setting the pace every day, only the 5-Day camping trek offers that among these three.

What none of these programs includes

Across all three listings, some costs stay with you: flights, tips and personal expenses. Travel insurance is excluded on the 5-Day camping trek and on the 3-Day program, and not listed on the Express. Personal trekking gear is your own on the trekking programs — on the 5-Day, even tent, sleeping bag and camping mattress appear as optional items, so confirm what your booking actually contains before you rely on it.

Park entry is a genuine difference, not a shared inclusion: the 3-Day and the 5-Day camping trek list the entrance fee as included; the W Trek Express does not mention it. If you have to buy it yourself, the official rate for foreign adults aged 18–59 is CLP 32,400 for a single day or CLP 48,500 for two or more days (valid up to 10 consecutive days), bought on pasesparques.cl at least 24 hours before entering — rates from the park's official 2026 tariff, in force since 1 May 2026.

And no program includes a weather guarantee. The park's own advice is blunt: Patagonian weather changes fast, and you should carry layers for rain, wind and snow. Chile's weather service has recorded 10-minute average winds of 74 km/h at its Puerto Natales station — an average over ten minutes, not a gust. Boats, viewpoints and daily plans bend to conditions, whichever program you choose.

When to book

Book earlier than feels reasonable. Sleeping on the W is not open ground: the park makes advance booking of refuges and campsites compulsory for the multi-day circuits, and only two concessionaires run them — Las Torres Patagonia on the east side, Vértice Patagonia on the west. A packaged tour's real value is that the operator holds this scarce inventory for you; the flip side is that departures fill when the huts and tent platforms do.

The concessionaires' own cancellation terms show how early capacity hardens. Las Torres Patagonia's published policy for individual trek bookings: cancel 90 or more days out and pay nothing, 20% at 89–70 days, 50% at 69–45 days, 100% at 44 days or fewer — and no-shows are charged in full. Tour operators set their own cancellation windows, shown at checkout, but they sit on top of this underlying rigidity.

If your program does not include the park ticket, buy it on pasesparques.cl at least 24 hours before entry; in the summer season the park gates operate 07:00 to 21:00.

The season: what CONAF closed in 2026

These are summer-season programs. The park applies an official winter hiking regulation from 1 May to 30 September every year, requiring registered, accredited guides on the mountain trails with strict ratios — a maximum of 4 hikers per single guide — and mandatory equipment including crampons or microspikes, headlamp and thermal layers.

In 2026 the restrictions were concrete: the park closed the W trail from 1 June to 31 July 2026, leaving only the Base Torres trail open and only with accredited guides, and made a licensed guide compulsory on Base Torres from 27 April to 30 August 2026. The O Circuit was closed from May until 31 October 2026 (CONAF). If a listing offers an unguided multi-day W in those windows, the park's rules say otherwise.

Daylight is the quieter seasonal factor: at this latitude the summer solstice brings roughly 16.5 hours of light against about 8 hours in midwinter — those long summer days are what make the big W stages walkable at a sane pace.
